Richard Duryea became interested in films when his father showed him Star Trek Four: The Voyage Home. He instantly became interested in classic science fiction and began to write his own at an early age. Drawing inspiration from the early works of Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick, Richard wrote stories of exploration and adventure that spanned across fantasy realms to the outer reaches of space. He finally saved up enough money to buy his first camera and immediately began creating films with his friends and family. With each new project Richard continues to learn from past mistakes and constantly moves forward to make each one better than the last.
Richard immediately knew that he wanted to become a director, but was well aware of the important relationship between directors and actors. To better communicate and understand his future talent, he enrolled in acting classes at Mead Senior High School. He participated in nine productions and directed two one-act plays. Upon graduation Richard received the department award for his acting talents.
To continue his film education Richard sacrificed some of his summer vacation to take classes at the Spokane Skills Center. There he learned many editing and cinematic techniques that he still uses to this day. He has entered into a number of short film competitions including North by Northwest’s 48-hour film festival and the Campus Movie Fest. Time-restrained projects such as these have made Richard into the fast paced director that he is today.
Last summer, Richard worked as the media specialist at Kidder Creek which is a sister camp of Mount Hermon. Each week he single-handedly shot and edited videos for the campers to take home at the end of each week. These videos have been used in advertising promos for the camp.
As Richard enters his senior year at CSUN with an emphasis in cinematography; he hopes to one day become a feature film director.
